Please join us in welcoming Omar González Salinas to Calgary! Omar is a Ph.D. candidate in history at El Colegio de México in Mexico City, and is one of two visiting doctoral students in the Department of History this semester. Omar is participating in the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), a short-term exchange program under Global Affairs Canada’s International Scholarships Program that provides students from post-secondary institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with opportunities for study or research at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Omar’s doctoral thesis, “Petróleo, nación e identidad nacional en México, 1914-1988” is a cultural history of the place of petroleum in Mexican national identity in the twentieth century. He will be working under the supervision of Dr. Amelia Kiddle this semester.  Welcome Omar and tell him the weather will get better eventually!
