Florentine Strzelczyk appointed deputy provost, Kevin McQuillan to join the School of Public Policy
Colleen De Neve, for University of Calgary
I am pleased to announce that Florentine Strzelczyk has been appointed deputy provost, a critical leadership role in the Provost’s Office, for a renewable five-year term from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023. Current deputy provost Kevin McQuillan is departing the role after four and a half years of service to become academic director and professor, Division of Fiscal and Economic Policy at the School of Public Policy on July 1, 2018.
Strzelczyk is currently vice-dean of the Faculty of Arts and a professor in the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures. She earned her PhD at the University of British Columbia, and her MA and Staatsexamen from the University of Göttingen. Her research focus is on German literature, culture, and film.
Strzelczyk joined the University of Calgary in 1997 and during her time at our institution has previously served in a variety of leadership roles including director of the Language Research Centre and as department head of three different units within the Faculty of Arts. In her role as vice-dean, Strzelczyk led a number of initiatives in the Faculty of Arts, including a major internal restructuring, the development of both the Faculty of Arts’ Strategic Plan (Energizing Arts 2017-22) and Internationalization Strategy (Engaged Citizenship in a Changing World 2017-22), as well as a task force on Indigenous initiatives that resulted in the hiring of a cluster of Indigenous scholars into the Faculty of Arts.
Strzelczyk has also led and participated in several institutional strategic initiatives such as the Indigenous Strategy Steering Committee and the Cross-Cultural Competencies Task Force. Please join me in welcoming Florentine Strzelczyk to her new role as deputy provost.
I would like to thank Kevin McQuillan for his tremendous service as deputy provost. McQuillan has had major responsibility for negotiations with TUCFA, academic space including a leadership role with the management of our downtown campus, enrolment management, and strategic initiatives including co-ordination of our international efforts by chairing the Provost’s International Steering Committee. He also oversaw our quality assurance processes including unit and mid-term reviews and chaired the Campus Strategic Initiatives Group. He has been an excellent member of the provost’s team and we wish Kevin well in his new position with the School of Public Policy.
I would like to thank the Advisory Selection Committee for their work in helping to select the new deputy provost. They are: Ed McCauley (vice-president research), Bart Becker (vice-president facilities), Dennis Sumara (dean of the Werklund School of Education), Lisa Young (dean and vice-provost graduate studies), Susan Barker (vice-provost student experience), Leslie Reid (vice-provost teaching and learning), and Courtney McVie (executive director, Office of the Provost).
Please join me in congratulating Florentine and Kevin on their new leadership roles.
