Associate Professor, Director, SAPL PhD & MEDes Graduate Prg

Barry Wylant is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director at SAPL, working with thesis students in the Master of Environmental Design and PhD programs. In his work and writings, Wylant emphasizes the “how” of design thinking. With extensive experience as an industrial designer and consultant, Wylant explores the intersection of design, technology, and community impact. His research interests focus on thoughtfulness in design, diagramming, and technological innovation, especially of products like medical devices that provide support and become deeply ingrained in people’s lives.  

Wylant is an innovative thinker whose comprehensive approach to the design process advances new possibilities for insights, innovations, and improvements within design. His unconventional applications of visual communication techniques break the boundaries of their potential to facilitate greater discovery and understanding.
