SAPL Faculty Lock-Up

The University of Calgary, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape faculty lock-up, 2019

Faculty Lock-Up

Faculty lockups extend our University's visual identity system. The SAPL lockup is a bound unit that has specific uses. It should not be reconfigured or manipulated. The name of our school must always appear in uppercase.

When do I use the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape lockup?
The institution’s strategic objective is to represent all entities within the university as part of a single, united family. Most of the time, the only graphic necessary to represent our activities is the University of Calgary logo. The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape lock-up is available for use in select situations where it becomes critical to isolate the structural entity.

So, when should I use or not use the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape sub-brand?

YES – use the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape lock-up!

  • Partnerships between the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape and another discipline-specific entity.
  • Discipline-specific conference presence/promotions (example, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape X Canadian Institute of Planners).
  • Team merchandise, certificates, giftware (example, mugs or training completion certificates).
  • Direct, specific recognition (such as a visual profile on a display board in a discipline-related clinic).
  • As context for very specific initiatives (example, when the Light Structures Research Unit is connected to the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape).
  • On internal function- or discipline-specific documentation (e.g. training handbook for the faculty, course outlines for studio classes).

NO – don’t use the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape lock-up!

  • Letterhead (print or digital): use standard university letterhead with customized return address block (School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape in text only).
  • Envelopes: use standard university letterhead with customized return address block (School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape in text only).
  • Business cards: use university standard design with customized content for personal affiliation (School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape in text only).
  • Website: use university crest and standard templates with navigation/header text to reflect school
  • As one of multiple campus entities sponsoring/supporting an event: use primary university logo with text identifiers for all involved entities.
  • Community-facing programs (e.g. Design Camp.): use the university logo and explain the organization in supporting text.

I work with a research group within the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape that has its own graphic logo. Can we keep it?
No. All research groups should follow the core identity standards.

Many types of labs, centres and institutes exist on campus, including those that have been formally created and those that have formed organically, those that are exclusive to the University of Calgary and those that are partnerships formed jointly with other organizations. In the past, in the absence of any structure or detailed guidelines, many research groups created their own visual identities. In many cases, these identities are not legally-protected marks. Research groups on campus (as of Sept 1, 2013) are expected to operate under the same identity guidelines and hierarchy as other structural groups.
