The integration of design with ecology and has been an overarching theme for all projects in his portfolio. Mathis has been the lead consultant for many large ecological restoration projects in Ontario including tallgrass prairies, wetlands, and deciduous forests. He has also designed and built many green roofs, rain gardens, private gardens, and public gardens in Toronto and other Ontario cities.
Mathis’ main research interests include urban ecology, ecological restoration, and point-source stormwater management (e.g. rain gardens, bioswales). He is currently partnering with the City of Calgary for two research projects including a sustainable parking lot and bee boulevard. These research projects will also involve work by students in his ecological restoration course (EVDS 683). Other planned research includes the trials of native plants for use on green roofs and public gardens in the semi-arid climates of the northern Great Plains.
