Our students benefit from small class sizes, great facilities, a supportive learning culture, and an active student association who organize social events and industry mixers throughout the year
From undergraduate, professional graduate and research graduate students, all the way to post-professional studies, our students embrace bold, entrepreneurial thinking in the built environment.
With 300 students and state-of-the-art facilities, SAPL provides an intimate and supportive learning environment. Students come from a wide range of academic disciplines and backgrounds, and a diversity of understandings about the nature of the professions. Some are interested in form-making, others see this work as a means for social or environmental change; some see it as an academic adventure, and some are full of technical knowledge.
Design and planning professionals are leaders in city building — and students need to develop leadership abilities during their studies. To supplement professional practice and leadership courses, students are actively encouraged to take part in professional associations such as Students' Association, the Canadian Architecture Students Association (CASA), and the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA). Students are also strongly encouraged to be involved in all aspects of Faculty governance and strategic planning, and be representative on committees and councils.Throughout the course of the year, UCalgary, SAPL, and the student association put together an active schedule of events to facilitate student networking, learning and idea-shaping. This includes the Design Matters Lecture Series, gallery openings and exhibitions, lunch and learns, as well as student-industry events. Find out what's happening on campus and at our downtown lab.
A vital strength of our programs come from the interdisciplinary nature of our school. Through interdisciplinary courses, students learn how to work within broader intellectual, environmental, and professional contexts. In addition to a rigorous curriculum, enrichment opportunities such as Block Courses and Study Abroad opportunities broaden the educational experience.
Students are supported throughout their studies through resources not only for their education, which includes workshop, fabrication and technical support. Students have access to a wide range of resources ranging from financial support to wellness. as well as entrance scholarships, bursaries and awards to lessen the financial burden.
