Yanghe Liu

Assistant Professor

Yanghe is an Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at SAPL. Trained as a planner and computer engineer, he uses AI and urban analytics to inform planning and design for smart cities. His current research focuses on autonomous transit in U.S. communities. His long-term interest is to augment and automate the planning and design process with generative AI.

Yanghe’s practice includes work with UN-Habitat’s Global Future Cities Initiative, planning projects in Southeast Asia and Africa, and historic redevelopment in Virginia and the Washington, DC region. He holds a PhD in Urban Planning and an MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida, an MCP in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Urban Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Beyond academia, he has run four full marathons and continues to do “old-school” freehand urban sketches.
