Professors receive SSHRC grant for environmental law conference

Four UCalgary Law professors received a $25,000 SSHRC grant to host the Indigenous Solutions for Environmental Challenges conference, taking place November 10-12 in Banff, AB.

Professors Sharon Mascher and Kathleen Mahoney (co-investigators), and Professors Nigel Bankes and Robert Hamilton, along with Phil Fontaine (collaborators), received a $25,000 SSHRC Individual Connection Grant to assist with funding for the conference, which will  use  the  context  of  the  historic Aguinda  v.  Chevron  environmental  case  to  consider  the  critical  role  of judicial  remedies  for  violations  of  the  rights  of  indigenous  and  other affected peoples  and  the  leading  systemic  obstacles  to  the  realization  of  remedies in  particular  cases,  both  in  Canada  and  beyond.

Professors presenting at the conference include Evar Oshionebo, Shaun Fluker, Jennifer Koshan, Kathleen Mahoney, Robert Hamilton, Nigel Bankes and Sharon Mascher.
