Professor honoured at annual Calgary Awards

Professor Shaun Fluker was honoured at the annual Calgary Awards on September 28, for his work with the law school's Environmental Law Clinic. The Calgary Awards is The City's citizen recognition program celebrating Calgarians and local organizations for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions to improve the quality of life in Calgary. UCalgary Law's Environmental Law Clinic won the Environmental Achievement Award for an Educational Institution. This award recognizes environmental achievements in advanced technology, conservation, protection, enhancement, education, stewardship and promotion that serves to reduce our impact on and/or restore the city's natural environment.

"Shaun and the clinic were among some very fine company. Other award winners are Dick Haskayne and some impressive local NGOs. It's wonderful to see one of our clinics getting this recognition," says Professor Jennifer Koshan, who is the past chair of the UCalgary Law Awards committee.

About the Environmental Law Clinic

The Faculty of Law has operated its Environmental Law Clinic since 2011 as a credit course in the JD curriculum under the supervision of Professor Shaun Fluker, providing students with opportunities to develop and practice legal skills while serving clients in public interest environmental law. Over the past 5 years, the Clinic has represented landowners, community associations, and public interest groups located in and around Calgary on a variety of matters giving students first-hand experience working on issues such as energy development within high density urban areas and legal protection for endangered species in Alberta.

Thanks to a $1 million gift from the Peacock Family Foundation, the environmental law clinic now operates as part of the Faculty's new Public Interest Law Clinic which will continue to provide JD students with opportunities to work with clients who advocate for systemic change in a range of public law matters including environmental protection.
