The University of Calgary mourns the loss of Gerald J. (Gerry) Maier, OC, CD, FCAE, FEC, Hon. LLD’05, who passed away on Nov. 4 at the age of 97. Gerry’s distinguished career in the energy sector — including his tenure as CEO and Chairman of Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas, and TransCanada Pipelines — shaped major developments across Canada and on the global stage. His leadership was guided by a strong sense of purpose and a belief in the transformative power of engineering.

A friend to UCalgary

Gerry was not only a titan in his profession, but also a steadfast friend of UCalgary, receiving an honorary degree in 2005, a recognition of both his professional achievements and his commitment to higher education. As a member of the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies Advisory Council, he offered insight and experience to help guide the university’s work.

His philanthropy has also left an enduring legacy at the Schulich School of Engineering. In 2006, he established the Gerald J. Maier/Dean Wirasinghe Entrance Awards, which support promising students at the start of their engineering journeys. He also played a pivotal role in creating the Maier Student Leadership Program, which provides resources and mentorship to student leaders, empowering them to make meaningful contributions on campus.

“Each year, Gerry took the time to personally meet with award recipients and engineering student association leaders,” says Dr. Anders Nygren, PhD, dean of the Schulich School of Engineering.

“He would connect directly with students, listen to their ambitions and challenges, and witness first-hand how his support was making a real difference.”

Gerry’s generosity also helped establish the annual Student Engineering Leadership Conference, a spring event that fosters growth, collaboration and innovation among emerging leaders.

The University of Calgary is deeply grateful for Gerald Maier’s unwavering commitment to developing future engineering leaders and for his decades of dedicated support. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. The campus flag is to be lowered today, Dec. 3, in his honour.
