Isabel Ochoa Quintero

Assistant Professor

Isabel is an Assistant Professor of Architecture. An educator, designer, and fabrication specialist, her creative practice explores the impact of computational workflows and emerging technologies on ceramic fabrication and architectural production. Isabel's research positions ceramics as a medium for engaging with both traditional building methods and technological advancements.

Isabel has developed an extensive teaching portfolio that spans hands-on material exploration, digital fabrication, building systems, and architectural representation. Her pedagogical approach emphasizes design research through making and prototyping at 1:1 scale, reflecting her belief that material experimentation is central to architectural education. By foregrounding fabrication as a tool for inquiry, she encourages students to integrate conceptual design thinking with the practical realities of construction and material performance. Prior to joining SAPL, she taught at both the Cambridge and Rome campuses of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.

Isabel is a co-founder of OCH Works, a design and research collaborative operating at the intersection of architecture, material computation, and fine craft. The practice explores how sustainable technologies and digital fabrication processes can be hybridized with traditional forms of making to produce materially responsive ceramic building systems. OCH Works has been recognized by the International Masonry Institute, Ontario Craft, the Interior Design Show Canada, the Kitchener-Waterloo Arts Fund, and the Canada Council for the Arts for its innovative projects and artistic merit, with a record of publication and exhibition in both national and international contexts.
