Dr. Sasha Tsenkova is a professor at SAPL who has dedicated her career to advancing the principles of social sustainability and urban innovation across the globe. Her work is guided by a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and scholarship. She has a PhD in Architecture and a PhD in Geography. With a background in architecture, urbanism, and planning, Dr. Tsenkova’s work spans over 30 years of research, teaching, and professional practice, focusing on creating more inclusive and sustainable urban environments. Her extensive consulting for international organizations, combined with her internationally acclaimed academic achievements, has positioned her as a leading figure in planning innovation for addressing the complex challenges of urbanization and social justice.

Dr. Tsenkova’s professional experience in 25 countries in Europe, North America and East Asia as an adviser to governments and international organizations (United Nations & World Bank) has provided exceptional opportunities to implement sustainable urbanism projects in many cities. She is the author/editor of over 170 publications on these issues and a strong proponent of design professionalism, excellence, and innovation in urban planning. 

Dr. Tsenkova’s career is shaped by her passion for cities and the belief that urban planning can be a powerful tool for social transformation. “The quest for social justice has been really fundamentally important for me.” Her journey began in architecture, but she became frustrated with the rigidities she encountered in practice. Urban planning provided opportunities to re-imagine cities, to develop bold visions of the future and to work in an exciting and collaborative way. Her career is a testament to her commitment to advancing social sustainability and urban innovation on a global scale. Her extensive experience in consulting and academia has positioned her as a leader in the field, dedicated to creating cities that prioritize the well-being of people and the environment.
