Welcome to the Master of Landscape Architecture Program

Thank you for considering the Master of Landscape Architecture Program at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

MLA 10 year anniversary.

Hi Everyone,

I’m excited to share how our Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program is uniquely positioned to help you become a leader in the field. As the youngest program in Canada and the only one in Alberta, you’ll be part of our 10th anniversary celebration this year.

Landscape architecture is recognized globally as a key discipline in addressing critical issues including climate change, resiliency, and sustainability. Our program will empower you to make significant contributions to the public realm, open space design, preservation and enhancement of natural habitats and biodiversity, and the creation of vibrant communities. Located in Calgary, you’ll benefit from diverse urban and regional landscapes as a place to live and a context for study and design exploration—from vast prairies to foothills and majestic mountains—providing you with context-specific experiential learning opportunities that will enrich your education.

One of the standout features of our program is the Work Integrated Learning Studio, which was launched in 2022. This unique component allows you to engage with external landscape architecture firms, offering you invaluable hands-on experience in real-world environments. Instead of simulations, you’ll perform actual tasks that reflect the challenges and opportunities you’ll face in your career. This immersive experience will not only enhance your learning but also strengthen your connections with fellow students, alumni, and industry professionals.

Our Master of Landscape Architecture is fully accredited and offers interdisciplinary learning opportunities with the Planning and Architecture programs, ensuring you are well-equipped to meet the high demand for landscape architects in Canada as well as to contribute to complex projects in collaboration with other professionals, such as planners, architects, and engineers.

Additionally, our Study Abroad Program will enhance your learning by exposing you to international contexts. This year, you have the opportunity to participate in programs in Zurich, Barcelona, and Tokyo, focusing on urban design, planning, and public space traditions and best practices. These experiences will broaden your horizons and deepen your understanding of landscape architecture on a global scale.

As we look forward to the next decade, I invite you to take the next step in your career and join our dynamic landscape architecture community. You’ll gain the experience and skills you need to shape sustainable environments and communities, addressing the pressing challenges of our time.

Sincerely,
