School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape
Yanghe Liu is an Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at SAPL. Trained as a professional planner and computer engineer, he uses artificial intelligence (AI) and urban analytics to inform and augment planning and design for smart cities.
Yanghe’s research examines how generative AI, machine learning, computer vision, and spatial analytics can support more adaptive, sustainable planning. His current work explores two areas: housing policy and autonomous vehicle-based transit. The former evaluates how planning interventions affect housing supply, affordability, and urban form. The latter focuses on how emerging mobility services can be deployed and accepted by communities.
Yanghe teaches community and regional planning studios, urban design software, GIS, data visualization, and transcalar sustainability. He integrates planning knowledge with digital tools and quantitative analysis to help students understand complex urban systems and develop practical responses to wicked problems.
Yanghe’s professional experience includes comprehensive planning, urban design, and real estate development. He has contributed to projects in the United States, China, Indonesia, Laos, and South Africa, such as UN-Habitat’s Global Future Cities Programme, the master plan for Ketapang in West Kalimantan, historic estate redevelopment projects in Virginia, and transportation policy evaluation for the Florida Department of Transportation. He is also a candidate member of the Canadian Institute of Planners.
