It was really worthwhile for me as a practitioner to attend this day-long conference. It's a comprehensive summary of the interdisciplinary ideas, themes and research the students at the faculty are currently working on. Lots for me to think about take back into day-to-day practice.

Urban Alchemy: Designing a City That Heals
Keynote Speaker: Druh Farrell
Druh served on Calgary City Council for twenty years. From transformational projects like the Central Library, East Village, and the Peace Bridge, to friendship-builders like dog parks, basketball courts, and community gardens, Druh learned that cities can bring people together or push them apart. Paying attention to intersectional issues like belonging, gender, ability, race, and climate, through design, can help build a healthier city.

About the Conference
The theme for the 6th annual SAPL Research Conference (RC22) is META + thesis: Resilience and Beyond.
The conference uses the term Metathesis to bridge the diversity of research emerging from the interdisciplinary fields within the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.
Metathesis is defined as a change in place or condition. ‘Meta’ meaning change or transformation, occurring after or beyond, and ‘Thesis’ relating to research that helps form the essence of going beyond an idea, into something that could be tangible, marketable, and real. We live in a world where changes in the environment, economy, society, and technology have created new norms within our surroundings and everyday lives. The introduction of new ideas, approaches, methods, and design work holds potential to be highly transformative, breaking old habits and ways of doing things.
The conference subtheme, Resilience and Beyond, responds to contemporary global socio-ecological and health crises, such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and growing economic and social inequities. Participants will explore themes and interventions that support a transition towards more resilient, sustainable, equitable, healthy, and adaptive environments and societies.
The conference will highlight work undertaken within and beyond the disciplines of architecture, planning, and landscape that pushes boundaries, creativity, and transcends established norms. 'Metathesis' provides a forum for students to share their research, and network with the wider urban design and community.
Participants registered with The Alberta Association of Architects ( AAA) are eligible to submit their registration details to AAA and receive Unstructured Professional Development (PD) hours. The keynote speaker presentation, panel discussion, student presentations, and workshops are all eligible for the Unstructured PD hours. Participants can use the digital copy of the conference booklet for the PD Hours submission via AAA Website.
