The call is out for aerospace entrepreneurs to join an accelerator program that bridges the gap between innovation and industry by enabling startups to strengthen technologies, refine business models and prepare for commercialization.

Calgary's aerospace sector continues to evolve, driven by advances in autonomous systems, digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and sustainability initiatives. At the same time, organizations across aerospace, aviation, and defence are actively seeking innovative solutions and new partnerships.

Through the two-year Aerospace Accelerator Program (AAP) and the Aerospace Innovation Hub, Innovate Calgary and the University of Calgary are helping connect entrepreneurs with those opportunities.

The Aerospace Innovation Hub, developed in partnership with UCalgary, provides startups with the space, tools, programming and industry connections they need to advance aerospace and advanced manufacturing technologies.

"The university contributes world-class research, engineering expertise, student talent and a strong culture of innovation, while Innovate Calgary helps translate innovation into commercial success," says Marian Danko, senior venture manager, New Ventures, at Innovate Calgary.

Advancing aerospace innovation in Calgary

The AAP, which accepted its first cohort on 2025, is designed for startup creators with deep technical expertise who are ready to commercialize their innovations and grow scalable businesses. The program provides up to $200,000 in funding along with mentorship, business training, industry connections, and access to specialized research and development resources.

Danko says the program was created to address the unique challenges aerospace startups often face such as long development timelines, complex regulatory requirements and significant capital needs. While funding is important, founders also need strategic guidance and meaningful connections to industry.

"The funding is just one piece of the puzzle," he explains. "Founders need access to expertise, infrastructure and opportunities to validate their technologies in real-world environments."

More than funding

Program participants receive one-on-one support through an expert advisor program, a structured curriculum featuring more than 24 workshops, and access to the Aerospace Innovation Hub's prototyping lab. They also become part of a broader ecosystem that includes researchers, industry leaders, investors and government partners.

Danko encourages entrepreneurs to apply, even if they are still developing their business.

"We're looking for ambitious founders with strong technology and a clear vision who are ready to learn, grow and engage with industry," he says.

Creating opportunities for the next generation

At its core, the AAP reflects UCalgary’s commitment to helping innovators turn bold ideas into real-world impact. By bringing together researchers, entrepreneurs, industry and government, the initiative is helping build a stronger aerospace ecosystem in Alberta and creating new opportunities for future innovators.

"There has never been a better time for innovators to get involved," says Danko. "We're excited to work with the next generation of entrepreneurs who will help shape Canada's aerospace sector."

With applications open for the program's third cohort until Sept. 30, the initiative is helping strengthen Calgary's growing reputation as a hub for aerospace innovation while supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs.
