Make your own origami Rex

Learn how to fold a mini version of our Dino-mite mascot!

Step-by-step instructions (with images)

1. Start with the printed side facing down, and the side with the QR code facing up.

2. Fold the paper diagonally in both directions and unfold. You should have an X-shaped crease.

Fold your own Rex Step 2

3. With the paper laid flat, fold the long edge (the one with Rex’s arms) to meet the centre line, forming a kite shape with the narrow point at Rex’s head. Repeat for the other side and unfold so you have the creases.

Fold your own Rex Step 3

4. Again, with the paper laid flat, fold the long edge (the one with Rex’s feet) to meet the centre line, forming a kite shape with the narrow point showing Rex’s tail. Repeat for the other side and unfold so you have creases in the paper.

You should now have a flat square with multiple creases, forming a diamond shape in the centre.

5. At the same time, tuck both the arm/leg edges inward along the creases you made in steps 3 and 4. This should create a triangular flap in the middle. Fold the flap down towards the tail.

Fold your own Rex Step 5

6. Repeat step 5 for the other side. You should end up with a diamond shape, with two triangular flaps pointed towards the tail.

Fold your own Rex Step 6

7. Fold about 1cm of the corner with Rex’s mouth inwards (tip: fold it so the tip meets the edge of the red section)

8. Flip the diamond over, and fold it in half lengthwise.

Fold your own Rex Step 8

9. Make a crease for Rex’s neck

10. Make a crease for Rex’s tail (tip: use the yellow section as a guide for where to fold)

Fold your own Rex Step 10

11. Unfold the half-diamond and tuck in the neck area using the creases you made in step 9. You should now have Rex’s head formed!

12. Unfold slightly and repeat the same tuck to form Rex’s tail.

Fold your own Rex Step 11

13. Now, form Rex’s feet by folding the side flaps outward slightly. Adjust as needed to help him stand, and you’re done!
